Costume Parade Excerpt:

Allie had been invited to a party at her friend Andy’s house.  She was excited because she loved parties! She also felt nervous.  It was a costume party, and Allie worried that some people would be wearing masks.  She felt afraid when people wore masks.  Uneasy questions filled her mind when she saw a person in a mask.  Who was it? What did they want? Were they kind or mean? Allie usually ran away when a person wearing a mask came near.

All of these thoughts filled her head as she thought about the party. She was so worried about it, that even though she was going to play with her friends Lydia, Andy, Owen, and Raj today, Allie didn’t really feel like going.  What if they wanted to talk about the party?  Allie took a deep dragon breath in and out and felt a bit better.  After all, she did want to see her friends. So, off she went to Raj’s house.

When Allie arrived, Andy, Owen, and Lydia were already there.  As the friends discussed what to play, Lydia told Andy she felt excited about the party, and then Raj agreed with her.  Allie felt worried all over again, her stomach churned. Then Andy asked Owen, “What do you think about the party Owen?”  Owen looked down at his feet feeling embarrassed and said, “I’m not sure if I can go.”

“Why not?” Andy, Raj, and Lydia asked.

Allie jumped in and said, “Hey, it’s ok if he can’t go.  I’m not sure I can either.” She didn’t know Owen’s reason, but felt like she should help him out.

Now, Andy looked hurt.  “Oh.” He said.  “I just hoped that you all would be there.”

Owen sighed, and said, “It’s just… I’m afraid of masks.”

Allie’s mouth dropped, she didn’t think anyone else had that fear.  It felt good knowing she wasn’t alone.  Quickly she admitted “Me too!”  So that Owen could feel better too.

Gabby the flower delivery van is worried that the people are not feeling enough kindness, because she doesn’t bring everyone gifts. Jamal an older and wiser delivery van helps her see kindness everywhere.

Sharing, Caring Excerpt:

Gabby waited eagerly to see what she would be delivering today. The flower delivery truck was parked next to an older flower truck named Jamal.  She felt so delighted, she began to talk at the flower truck next to her. Jamal looked at her puzzled.  She seemed to be carrying on without even expecting a response.  “I wonder what I’ll be delivering today? Maybe I’ll deliver red, yellow, and orange tulips for a birthday, or white and red roses for an anniversary.  Maybe I’ll deliver happy daffodils to help someone feel better, or a rainbow of flowers, just because. I’d better take a deep dragon breath, I’m a little over excited.”  So, she took a deep breath in and out Jamal smiled.  Gabby certainly was enthusiastic. After she finished her deep breath, she started talking again.  “It is so much fun!  I love to watch as people’s puzzled faces turn into smiles.  Without me how would people know they are loved?”  The little flower delivery truck felt very proud.

Jamal said, “You’re right. We do get to show people that others care about them, and I love making my deliveries too.  I’m pretty sure that people can show each other they care, without sending flowers.  We are just one of those ways.”

Gabby’s forehead wrinkled as she thought.  “I don’t think I’ve seen people show they care any other way.”

“Well, it’s just a thought. Maybe we can look, while we’re doing our first deliveries today, and see if we notice any other ways people show they care.”  Jamal said.  “After all, we both like seeing people light up with happiness, we’ll just get some bonus smiles.”

Giselle the little giraffe feels nervous its her first day with a babysitter. How will Ginny help her feel better?

Sharing a Snack Excerpt:

The sun warmed the land easily without a cloud in the sky to block its rays. The baby giraffes relaxed with their mamas in the warm light. Giselle Giraffe looked up at her beautiful mama and beamed. The little giraffe loved being with her mama, and she stuck right next to her, always. Her mama looked down at Giselle, smiled, and gave her a gentle nudge. “Giselle, I’m going with some of the other mamas to get some food. It will be safer for you to stay here with the other little giraffes and the rest of the mamas.” Giselle looked at her mama, feeling her eyes fill with tears. She had never been away from her mama before and the thought scared her. “Do you have to go?” She asked.

Her mama smiled and said, “All the mama giraffes take turns going off for some food. Now, it’s my turn. I’ll be back before you know it.” Mama looked carefully at Giselle and saw that her little giraffe was feeling worried, so she decided to introduce her to one of the other giraffes. “Giselle meet Ginny. She will look after you while I’m gone.” Giselle looked up at the kind giraffe smiling down at her. Ginny seemed nice, she just wasn’t Giselle’s mama. The little giraffe nuzzled her mama, and her mama gently groomed Giselle’s head. “If you get nervous remember to take your deep dragon breaths. I’ll be back soon.” And with that Giselle’s mama left. The little giraffe felt sad as she watched her mama leave, so she took a deep dragon breath in and out. She could still see her mama, and her mama was smiling. Giselle took another deep dragon breath in and out, and realized if her mom felt happy everything was OK.
